Beat Overwhelm: Take a Small Step

It is almost August and there are so many worthwhile ways to spend my time that I often end up in a quandary. What is most important item to take on and how overwhelming it can feel. Thanks to a good friend and coach, Alan Roby, who reminded me of a famous quote by Goethe:

“Whatever you can do or dream you can do, begin it.
Boldness has genius, power and magic in it!”

I have learned the truth of this many times but forget that the journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step. When a task feels so overwhelming just do one small part to begin:
  • Open and name a document
  • Make an outline
  • Read 3 pages in a research book
  • Make an appointment
  • Clear your desk
  • Whatever small step you can think of, then list some other small steps to do tomorrow

So I did that today to update this website by just changing a few paragraphs and ended up spending 5 hours to update the whole site. The first step was the fuel I needed to make long overdue changes, including this post!

So be encouraged and take one small step. I am taking large steps to the kitchen now. It's time for my long overdue dinner!
